* ATTRACTIONS

Sherbrooke Village
Sherbrooke

This picturesque former lumbering and shipbuilding community looks as it did 100 years ago, before gold mining transformed it into a boomtown. 25 buildings on their original sites: Cumminger Brothers’ Store; Ambrotype Studio; Sherbrooke Hotel; a typical rural doctor’s office (c 1910) in the original home; the grand residence of John Cumminger; the Company Store, with traditional Nova Scotian crafts; and the rare working up-and-down sawmill, just down the road.

Admission charged.

Canso Islands National Historic Site of Canada
Union St. Canso

Once a thriving community of fishermen and merchants from New England, the site commemorates the significant role the fishery played in international trade and commerce in the early 18th century. The Visitor Reception Center features an audio-visual show on the Grassy Island settlement, life-size dioramas of the interiors of three island properties — a tavern, a merchant’s house, and a military officer’s residence – and artifacts excavated from these properties. Visitors go to the island by boat (weather permitting); an interpretive trail links eight designated sites.

Admission charged

Memory Lane Heritage Village
Lake Charlotte

Heritage village depicting rural Nova Scotia in the 1940s; living history museum, knowledgeable staff in period clothing. General store, boatshop, homestead, lumberjack meal at the cookhouse. Travel around the site on a period bicycle or in a ‘49 International truck.

Admission charged.
